About this blog
I’ll have to answer a few questions here. Especially some ‘why?’-questions. If not for you, then at least for me.
Why did I create this blog? Well, I’ve been toying with the idea of a blog for some time now. I’ve tried some things, on other servers, hosted by someone else, seen some reactions. And then I thought: I’ve been maintaining something like a blog for several years now, my news page is quite similar. Maybe I can replace my news page? At least I’ll have to get to know blogging…
What topics do I want to cover in this blog? My topics usually are PC Lint and other tools for code quality, we’re talking software development here. Then configuration management, especially GNU Make; for GNU Make I have some plans, maybe a blog can be the communication platform. I may want to include project management later, but, for now, I’ll have plenty of ideas on these topics alone.
How many updates per second can you expect here? OK, not too many. I’m quite busy through the year, and I will not start a blog here commenting every single news item related to software quality, Pirsig or the world at large. I will also remain silent on most other interesting topics, and not even PC lint releases or GNU Make revolutions will be commented here, unless I have something to add. But to be notified when something new is published, this software is equipped with RSS-feeds. Don’t hold your breath, use some intelligent software.
Why is this blog in English, and not in … (fill in your own favorite language)? OK, I am fluent in three languages, really fluent. However, unlike maintenance of my website (static content only), blogging in three languages simultaneously is not a real option. It would only slow me down. My website is primarily in German, since I live in Germany, second language is English, the Lingua Franca of the IT industry. And the Dutch version of my website is more or less orphaned. Yes, I looked at my website statistics. But still: Why not in German? Frankly: Most of the targeted audience, even if German is their first language, will have some command of the English language, but a large part of the targeted audience will have no command of the German language whatsoever. My main market is Germany (for now), my main audience is international.
For now, this page is long enough. I now just have to get some small technicalities under control, and then I’m online!
